Dandy Don Tames Durango
This past weekend, Dandy Don Ruggles, age 62 and a 16-year member of FLS, travelled to Durango, Colorado for the tough DURANGO DOUBLE. Ultra-runners were competing from all over the country.
On Saturday, Oct. 7, he ran a 50K race at altitude in 7:29, one minute under his goal time, this despite the fact he has been battling plantar faciitis and other injuries for months. Sunday morning Don was extremely sore, but ran a mountainous marathon in 5:06, 14 minutes under his goal time. Wow! While getting a much-needed massage afterwards, Don was called up off the table for a second-place award in his age group for his combined time in the two races.
Don teaches engineering at Hightower High School in Missouri City, after a long career in the private sector. Don had always wanted to teach, to honor his father, who was a teacher.
Congrats to a great guy, and FLS is proud to have him as a long-time member. He is one tough hombre.
